A Cuban Sandwich is basically a variation  of a Ham and Cheese Sandwich.  It was created in cafes to cater to Cuban workers in Cuba, or to immigrant communities of expatriates brought it over to Miami, where it is very popular today.  Making a Cuban sandwich consists of Ham, Roasted Pork, Swiss Cheese, Mustard, Pickle Slices (and sometimes Salami) served on Cuban Bread. The sandwich is then weighted and grilled in a frying pan, or on a panini press.

 Classic Cuban Sandwich

  • 2 Hoagie or Submarine Rolls
  • 2 Tablespoons of Dijon Mustard (or yellow mustard)
  • 2 oz. Baked Ham, very thinly sliced
  • 2 oz. Roasted Pork, shredded or thinly sliced
  • 2 oz. Swiss Cheese, very thinly sliced
  • 1 Large Pickle (or 2 small ones) sliced thinly, lengthwise
  • Salt and Pepper
  • 2 Tbsp of Butter
  1. Cut the Hoagie rolls lengthwise in half, leave one edge intact.
  2. Spread each half of the roll with the mustard, and then evenly divide the remaining ingredients between both sandwiches. Ham, Pork, Cheese and Pickle Slices, Season with the salt and pepper and then close the bread.
  3. Heat your panini grill, or sandwich press, and brush both sides of it with your butter.
  4. Close the press and grill until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted. About 5-10 minutes.
  5. **If you don't have a grill or press, you may cook the cuban sandwich as a grilled cheese with a tin-foil lined weight, ie. a brick to weight the sandwich down.
